Behind the dial

We're Kitan Club, a design studio in Yoyogi, Tokyo. We have spent two decades making small plastic things that have to survive being folded into a capsule, dropped into a tray and opened by someone standing in a station corridor. That is a narrow brief and we have never wanted a wider one.

The club started with capsule machines and still thinks in their terms. A series has to work as a line-up of four to eight ideas, each one legible at arm's length, each one folding into 70 mm. When we moved into boxed formats the constraints came with us, because they are what make the work look like ours rather than like everyone's.

Our best known line is Fuchiko on the Cup — a figure that hangs on the rim of a glass — and the Putitto series that grew out of it. Alongside those we run cat series, nature series, and collaborations with licences and guest studios. The tagline we print on everything is simple enough: collect the unexpected, celebrate the unique.

This site is where we list what is currently available to buy. Each entry carries the line-up size, the price we see at the time of writing and a link through to the listing where the order is actually placed. We do not hold stock here and we do not take payment here.
